Their intrepid reporter, after what I'm sure was a grueling round of research involving at least three phone calls, uncovered the previously untold story that rich kids have an advantage in the admissions process. I periodically scan the Washington Post blog Admissions 101, and recently came across a ridiculous debate about school size. The author, my longtime acquaintance Jay Matthews, asserted that large schools offer more options, then noted that he received a ton of feed back that smaller schools do an even better job of helping students look at options. That's just hooey.

There's a common mantra among admissions officers and guidance counselors alike that admissions is NOTHING like any commercial process, so any comparison to a commercial process is immediately viewed with great derision. Among these the ultimate sin is to compare the admissions process to making a purchase, like buying a car or a house.

Don't get us wrong. Professors consider "cram" to be a four-letter word. We don't think pulling an all-nighter the night before the test is the royal path to success. But sometimes cram happens. So if you're going to do it -- like 99.9947 percent of other college students -- at least do it right. After all, we'd hate to see you blow off all that sleep and still wreck your GPA.

As seniors receive their admissions decisions, high school juniors should use the first few weeks in April to set up one-to-one meetings with their guidance counselors. Regardless of whether or not you attend a large public high school or a small private school, your guidance counselor is bound to be very busy.
