Southern schools ruled the roost in Kiplinger's recent ranking of the best values in public colleges and universities. The financial advice publication ranked public, private, and liberal arts colleges, and published their rankings last month. Among public schools, the University of North Carolina won first place for in-state tuition and aid, the University of Florida came in second, and the University of Virginia third.

The Princeton Review let loose its findings two weeks ago, and University of Florida got more publicity for being the "top party school" than Bennington College, which was ranked #1 for encouraging class discussions. U.S. News & World Report is under increasing scrutiny for their ranking methodology as evidenced by many university presidents refusing to participate this year. And more often than not, an admission officer is secretly rolling their eyes at you when you refer to either one of these rankings during a campus visit.
