Last week, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced its intent to spend hundreds of millions of dollars on college completion. In fact, they hope to double the number of disadvantaged students who complete college. A majority of their focus will be on community colleges. Melinda Gates said that Americans put much money into collegiate enrollment, but not nearly as much into completion.

Her educational experience touts five schools in six years. Among her public and private university experiences, Palin spent a total of three semesters in community college. Two of those semesters were spent taking general studies courses before transferring to the University of Idaho.

Why Should You Attend a Community College?

Richard O'Brien wasn't sure he wanted to attend a community college. "Most of my friends were going straight to four-year schools and there is some negative stigma attached to attending community colleges," he says. After considering the pros and cons, O'Brien decided to attend Danville Area Community College and then transfer to complete his engineering degree at the University of Illinois. "I wanted to save money & play baseball for the community college team (which ended up giving me a scholarship), and sort out what I wanted to major in without getting hit with a serious financial penalty & that decided the matter for me," says O'Brien.

Some have even gone so far as to encourage their children to attend community colleges this fall over four-year institutions. As a result, community college enrollment numbers are increasing across the country.Last year, 11.5 million students were enrolled at a community college. This summer, enrollment numbers shot up and fall enrollment is projected to skyrocket as well.
