These new rankings, based on the Times Higher Education-QS World University Rankings, are a befuddling play off of their annual America's Best Colleges rankings.

Best College Values

Southern schools ruled the roost in Kiplinger's recent ranking of the best values in public colleges and universities. The financial advice publication ranked public, private, and liberal arts colleges, and published their rankings last month. Among public schools, the University of North Carolina won first place for in-state tuition and aid, the University of Florida came in second, and the University of Virginia third.

The Best Business Schools

In BusinessWeek's most recent rankings of business schools, the University of Chicago, Harvard, and Northwestern took top spots for their full-time MBA programs. Business schools at UCLA, Emory, and USC, meanwhile, took top honors for their part-time programs.

It Pays to Do Well on SAT at Baylor

The student newspaper at Baylor University in Waco, Tex., recently uncovered that the school has offered a monetary reward -- $300 in bookstore credit or even $1,000 in merit-based financial aid -- to admitted freshmen who retake the SAT and raise their scores. It's true, students and their families always need more cash, and what's the harm in helping students increase their scores? The question comes down to motivation. Some have suggested that the school simply wants to increase its position in U.S. News & World Report, which uses SAT scores as a factor in its rankings. Baylor professors and others aren't happy about the practice.

College Rankings Walk the Fine Line

The Princeton Review let loose its findings two weeks ago, and University of Florida got more publicity for being the "top party school" than Bennington College, which was ranked #1 for encouraging class discussions. U.S. News & World Report is under increasing scrutiny for their ranking methodology as evidenced by many university presidents refusing to participate this year. And more often than not, an admission officer is secretly rolling their eyes at you when you refer to either one of these rankings during a campus visit.
